Sociolinguistic researchs (LOREGIAN-PENKAL, 2005; SANTOS, 2012; ANDRADE, 2010) have show the occurrence of other variants that compete with the traditional pronoun tu to address the interlocutor regarding the expression of the second person of the singular (P2) — você, o senhor and zero (empty category) —, which often present syncretism in the oblique functions and in the use of possessives. Based on the contributions of Variationist Sociolinguistics to teaching (COAN; FREITAG, 2010; VIEIRA; FREIRE, 2014), among them the proposal of the linguistic variation continuum proposed by Bortoni-Ricardo (2004), the general objective of this work is to offer a contribution to the teaching of Portuguese language with regard to the expression of P2 in an approach that includes linguistic variation, as proposed by the official documents on the teaching of Portuguese in the country. As for the specific objectives, we intend the following: (i) to map the P2 variants that students use in both oral and written texts; (ii) to lead these same students to recognize how the degree of formality and the point at which the communication event is located affect the choice of P2 variants, so that they can make more conscious use of these variants, that is, select the variant more appropriate to the status of the interlocutor and the degree of monitoring of the communicative event: in less formal contexts, manifest the syncretism of treatment; in more monitored communication contexts, uniformity honored by tradition. This work adopted the action research methodology (TRIPP, 2005), developing a pedagogical mediation with retextualization activities in the stylistic monitoring continuum, observing the phenomenon of variation in the expression of the second person singular, resulting in an e-mail located at the [+monitoring] field of this continuum through the application of the first and seventh of the operations described in Marcuschi (2010). The results attest that the students were able to operate with the P2 variants in the subject's syntactic function according to the stylistic monitoring continuum. As for the oblique and possessive pronominal forms, they did not fully achieve what was expected, but at least they recognized the communicative situations that favor or not the uniformity of treatment.
