Spelling teaching in EJA with support from morphological aspects of Portuguese
Spelling. Competitive contexts. Morphology. Teaching.
Due to the many cases of non-one-to-one correspondence between letters and graphemes in Portuguese, many students exhibit spelling errors not only in literacy, but throughout their entire Basic Education. To resolve spelling issues, schools traditionally use word lists for memorization or dictation to reinforce spelling. However, the morphological component of grammar can be used to help learn spelling patterns, as guided by the National Curricular Parameters (Brazil, 1998) and the National Common Curricular Base (Brazil, 2017). In this sense, this project seeks to develop strategies, based on morphology, that favor the teaching and learning of the use of graphemes in competitive contexts, such as <s> and <z> in the representation of the phonemes /s/ and /z/. It is argued that systemic teaching, which leads the student to understand when to use a grapheme or another according to morphological aspects, generates more consolidated learning, breaking with the traditional practice of mechanical memorization of spellings.
