SUMMARY:

Based on the observation that the proximity between speech and writing is often inevitable, and on the understanding that reading and writing are essential skills for active citizenship—since their absence can lead to social exclusion—this study aims to investigate and analyze the linguistic phenomenon of R deletion in the writing of 9th-grade students from a public state school in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. The research stems from the observation of the omission of R in syllable-final position, in both verbs and non-verbs, which appears to reflect what previous studies on speech have already indicated: the deletion of R in coda position. Based on this, an action research project was carried out, grounded in the principles proposed by Thiollent (2005), in order to verify the occurrence of this phenomenon in students’ writing. The choice of 9th-grade students is justified by the expectation that, at this stage, learners should have acquired a certain level of linguistic adequacy for different communicative situations. The theoretical framework draws on recent studies on rhotic variation in Brazil, with particular emphasis on research concerning R in syllable codas, as well as on the principles of Variationist Sociolinguistics (Labov, 2008). Thus, the investigation seeks to determine the extent to which this phenomenon influences students’ writing, as highlighted by studies such as Dutra and Pinto (2014), which show that R deletion has extended into writing, raising concerns among Portuguese language teachers. As a contribution, this research proposes didactic intervention activities aimed at helping students produce texts with fewer spelling errors.
