SUMMARY:

The general objective of this study is develop students' reading competence by fostering proficient and critical readers who are capable of understanding, interpreting, and reflecting on different narrative text types in order to act consciously in society. To achieve this purpose, the specific objectives are: (a) to implement a didactic sequence focused on the teaching of reading through narrative text types such as news articles, chronicles, and short stories; (b) to explore the lexical, grammatical, and structural aspects present in these genres; (c) to apply reading comprehension strategies, such as prediction, identification of explicit information, and inference of implicit information; and (d) to address the theme of honesty as a means of promoting citizenship development. This is a qualitative action-research study, according to Thiollent (2011), and it will be conducted with an eighth-grade class at a municipal school in Barra Mansa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The theoretical framework is grounded in scholars of Text Linguistics and Literacy Studies who are references in the teaching of reading comprehension, genres, and textual typologies. The study is expected to contribute to reading instruction from a critical and social perspective
