SUMMARY:

This work has as its central objective to train literary readers based on the concept of literacy. Considering that the target audience for this research are 5th year students, the option to read popular literature, the cordel, is because this type of genre summarizes characteristics that are closer to the young audience, such as rhymes and musicality, often sung in hills and communities, such as “pancadões”. In the classic Iracema, a retelling in cordel, by Stélio Torquato Lima, the work proposal is to show another rhymed structure, whose objective is to awaken in readers not only the pleasure of reading, but to be a way for these young people, on the contrary from memorizing the story to answering evaluation questionnaires, being able to dialogue with the texts and express their knowledge of the world, becoming literary readers. To achieve this, the methodology used in this research will consist of a theoretical review of the conception of reading and literacy and the adoption of pedagogical actions that dialogue with the social context in which these readers are inserted.
