SUMMARY:

The main objective of this research was to develop and improve the skills and abilities of comprehensive and reflective reading of eighth grade students in the news genre. This work presented a study on the impartiality that exists in this journalistic genre and the argumentative strategies used by the authors in writing the text - epistemic modalization as a resource for value judgment in the news genre. In addition, it brought a study on epistemic modalizers and the use of metacognitive theories, which were used in the activities, since the research started from the hypothesis that these theories help students to identify, in the news, the marks of value judgment left by the authors. By bringing metacognition into reading teaching, the objective was to show how metacognitive strategies could help students in the learning process and in the development of reading skills. The theoretical support for the proposed research came from Bakhtin (2003, 2016), Marcuschi (2008, 2010), Alves Filho (2011) and Lage (1987, 2004) to talk about textual genre and the journalistic genre news; Cária (2021), Melo (1995), Nascimento (2017), Oliveira (2017), Ribeiro and Guedes (2015), Castilho and Castilho (1993) and Koch (2011) to present modalization, verb modalization and modalization strategies in the news; Kleiman (2004, 2013), Lucas (2016), Portilho and Dreher (2012), Ribeiro (2003), Palomanes (2023), Solé (1998) to address reading, cognition and metacognitive theories. The methodology chosen for this project was action research, since it is an action-research method whose phases are to identify the problem, plan a solution, implement actions, describe and evaluate the results. With the results of the activities, it was found that it is important to understand the use of epistemic modalizers as markers of value judgment in the news and also to understand that they function as discursive markers in these texts. Furthermore, it was essential to show students the use of metacognitive strategies in the development of reading tasks to help them be aware of what they understood and what they did not understand, in addition to showing how relevant the work with metacognition is.
