A proposal for using texts with a focus on the formation of competent readers
Reading; Reader training; Reading strategies; Literacy; Competent reader
Given the importance of reading in the social development of individuals versus the low reading performance of Brazilian students - especially those in public schools - the main objective of this research is to contribute to a practice of working with texts focused on the development of active, critical, competent readers, capable not only of dealing with the intentionality of the text, but also of acting on it. The panorama is challenging and, although there is no final recipe (due to the various factors involved, many of them extracurricular, among others), it is the school's role to think about possible interventions regarding the less than encouraging results that recent research has presented in relation to the important subject of reading competence. We understand that in order to develop competent readers, it is important for schools to work on reading based on a methodology that encompasses the skills necessary to develop these readers. And it is based on this perspective that each chapter of this work was designed not only to support the research, but especially to build an intervention proposal based on a methodological foundation that speaks to what the parameterizing documents expect from work with reading. From the perspective of reading and reader training from the perspective of modern linguistics – more specifically from the perspectives of the PCN (1998), WERNECK (2012) and KOCH (2006) – to the presentation of the low rates related to the reading competence of Brazilian students, culminating in the proposal of a methodological intervention in the work with the text (and the training of active, critical, competent readers), based on the reading model proposed by WENECK (2012) comprised of three stages: pre-text, text and post-text. The research methodology used was qualitative and quantitative.
