SUMMARY:

This research aims to investigate the contributions of the digital discourse genre known as the "meme" to the development of critical reading skills among 9th-grade students, focusing on problematizing sexist stereotypes present in social practices and digital environments. We proceed from the understanding that memes—by combining verbal and non-verbal languages—constitute multisemiotic texts that require readers to mobilize linguistic, discursive, sociocultural, and inferential knowledge to construct meaning. Although this genre circulates widely on social media and is recognized in official educational documents as a valid object of study, its classroom application remains limited; this highlights the need for pedagogical approaches that explore its educational potential. Grounded in the work of authors such as Kleiman, Koch and Elias, Solé, Rojo, Bakhtin, Dawkins, Shifman, Costa, Bourdieu, Butler, and Freire, this study adopts a qualitative, interventionist approach—specifically action research—to be conducted with a 9th-grade class at a rural municipal school in Vassouras, Rio de Janeiro. As an educational outcome, a sequence of activities focused on the reading, analysis, and production of memes will be developed and implemented, emphasizing reflection on sexist discourses and stereotypes. We hope to contribute to the development of critical readers who are capable of interpreting multisemiotic texts, recognizing the effects of meaning produced by the interplay of different languages, and taking an ethical, reflective, and critical stance regarding the discourses circulating within digital culture.
