RESUMO:

This research intends to contribute, by reading and analyzing Machado de Assis' tales, both in their original form and in the transposed to comics, for the formation of the literary reader in elementary school. To this end, a didactic sequence was proposed with Machado's tales in a 9th grade elementary school class in 2019, in a public school in the state of Rio de Janeiro, located in Belford Roxo. The didactic sequence comprised the reading of several short stories by Machado de Assis, study of the narrative elements, structure of the short story genre and, at the end, reading and rewriting of the short story “Uns Arms”. In this activity students should shift the narrative focus from omniscient narrator to character narrator from the point of view of Dona Severina, a married woman whose arms attracted a 15-year-old named Ignatius. Moreover, in rewriting, they should, to replace their arms, choose another body part that, in their opinion, most appeals to young people in the 21st century. An activity was also performed with the tale “The Alienist”, which consisted of reading and analyzing four different adaptations of this tale for the comic. In this activity the students had to analyze how each comic artist used his own skills and style by using the comic resources to transpose the story to the sequential graphic narrative. At the end of the research it was verified whether or not the use of comics classics as an instrument of approximation of the student to the literary text, that is, if in fact, the resources offered by comics are able to be a viable support to promote this approach, and whether the proposed activities actually contributed to his education as a literary reader. The fundamental idea of this work is based on the thought of Antonio Candido, who understands access to literature as a right for all. In addition, we seek to consider literary formation as a continuous, subjective process that can be accomplished through the exposure of students to various literary experiences throughout their school career. To theoretically illuminate this reflection, texts by Michèle Petit, Cecilia Bajour, Jorge Larrosa, Teresa Colomer, Tzvetan Todorov, Julio Cortázar, among others, were discussed.
