SUMMARY:

The growing demand for effective and sustainable methods of treating cattle farming wastewater has driven research for innovative and ecological alternatives. Constructed wetlands emerge as a promising solution, combining the natural ability of plants and microorganisms to degrade and remove pollutants with the controlled design of artificial systems. The addition of Lithothamnium calcareum can enhance the efficiency of these systems by promoting the removal of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, elements often responsible for the eutrophication of water bodies. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the influence of adding Lithothamnium calcareum to the soil of constructed wetlands treating cattle farming wastewater, particularly on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. To this end, four pilot-scale constructed wetlands (CW) with a volume of 36 L and a planted area of 0.22 m², fed with cattle farming wastewater, will be monitored. The beds will be filled with 0.15 m of gravel as a support material, and above this, a 0.03 m layer of washed sand to establish the initial root system of vetiver grass. Each CW will be configured differently: one control (without the addition of Lithothamnium), and the others with the addition of 10%, 20%, and 30% of Lithothamnium calcareum to the support material (v/v), respectively. The first phase of the research will last 4 months, with the CWs fed at an organic loading rate of 7.5 gBOD/m².d, resulting in an influent organic load of 1.65 gBOD/d. In the second phase, also lasting 4 months, the CWs will be fed at an organic loading rate of 15 gBOD/m².d, resulting in an influent organic load of 3.30 gBOD/d. At the end of this project, the goal is to determine the influence and the optimal dosage of Lithothamnium for nutrient removal, identify the maximum efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus removal due to the presence of Lithothamnium, evaluate the performance of CWs under different organic loads, and establish scaling criteria for full-scale CWs. These results may contribute to more efficient and sustainable treatment techniques, reducing the environmental impact of cattle farming effluents, and provide a basis for future studies and practical applications.
