SUMMARY:

With a high dependence on mineral fertilizers, Brazil imports most of these inputs, which impacts production costs. However, the extensive use of chemical fertilizers causes long-term problems, such as the depletion of soil organic carbon, resulting in acidification, structural deterioration and reduced productivity over time. In addition, the application of these conventional fertilizers contributes significantly to the eutrophication of water bodies and indirectly increases greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, organomineral fertilizers stand out as efficient alternatives, combining mineral and organic nutrients to increase the nutrient content in organic materials, while maintaining the effectiveness of mineral fertilizers. Microalgae biomass emerges as an important organic source in these fertilizers, contributing to improving soil quality, reducing acidification, increasing productivity and minimizing soil degradation. Studies indicate that microalgae biomass can provide substantial amounts of calcium and iron compared to traditional fertilizers, representing a valuable strategy for maximizing the resources and nutrients available in modern agriculture.
