SUMMARY:

The modernization of agriculture occurred through the consolidation and intensification of the transformations that occurred in the field, such as: the mechanization of production; genetical enhancement; development of agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers and pesticides. Through the indiscriminate use of these inputs for high yield production, there is an increase in water contamination and agricultural soils. Agriculture, together with urbanization, are known as the main responsible for the degradation of water courses, leading to the occurrence of eutrophication and contamination of them. Thus, this project aims to analyze the levels of contamination of water and bottom sediments of water bodies belonging to the Barracão dos Mendes microbasin, a place with intensive production of vegetables, located in the municipality of Nova Friburgo, mountain region of the state of Rio of January. Water and sediment samples will be collected in the dry season (May to August) and in the rainy season (September to April), in order to estimate the quality of water and sediment in the region. To determine the quality of water and sediment, the Water Quality Index (IQA) and the Canadian Sediment Quality Protocol will be used. To analyze the nutrients, the nutrient load and the Trophic Platform Index (EIT) will be calculated and for metals, the Contamination Index (Cd), the Toxic Metals Pollution Index (IPH), the Enrichment Factor (FE) ) and the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo). Then, statistical methods of analysis, unidirectional variance and Pearson correlation will be used. At the end of the project, it is intended to obtain an overview, seasonal and spatial of the water quality and bottom sediments of the Barracão dos Mendes Microbasin, an essential result to assist in the decision making of the management of the hydrographic basin.
