SUMMARY:

Deforestation of tropical forests is a major factor in the loss of biodiversity and important ecosystem services. The forest areas have several environmental functions such as maintaining the hydrological cycle, reservoirs and sources of mineral elements for biogeochemical cycles, soil conservation, habitat for species of plants, animals and microorganisms, conservation of genetic material, in addition to providing food to populations locations. Cedrela sp., From the Meliaceae botanical family, popularly known as cedar, is part of the list of priority species for conservation and has great potential as a marker of climatic variations. This research had as it’s general objective to analyze the influence of local climatic variables, from a historical series of 47 years, and the variations of El Niño-Oscilação Sul, using a historical series of 67 years, in the growth layers of the species Cedrela sp. of the micro-region of Óbidos-PA, in order to recommend this species as a marker of climate change. The specific objectives were (i) to verify the formation of the growth layers of the individuals of Cedrela sp., (Ii) to determine the annuality, with later definition of age by counting the growth layers of the secondary xylem of the individuals of Cedrela sp., ( iii) to evaluate the influence of local meteorological elements, rainfall, average temperature, cloudiness and potential evapotranspiration on the radial growth of Cedrela sp. and (iv) to evaluate the behavior of the radial growth of Cedrela sp. due to the El Niño-Oscilação Sul (ENOS) phenomenon. To carry out the analyzes, ten discs were collected in a sustainable forest management plan in Gleba Xiriri in the municipality of Óbidos, Pará, in the year 2018. Then, the samples were prepared for those analyzed using the software Image-Pro 4.5´, spreadsheet from Microsoft Excel, COFECHA and ARSTAN, respectively, for the measurement of ring widths, data organization, measurement analysis, standardization and transformation of ring width data into indexes. Subsequently, these indexes were correlated with the local climatological variables of rainfall, average air temperature, cloudiness and evapotranspiration, and with the climatic event ENOS. The observed results were (i) the growth rings are annual, semi-porous, delimited by marginal parenchyma band; (ii) estimated age between 61 to 205 years (1812 to 2017) to (iii) correlation was positive and significant for rainfall in November of the previous year, negative and significant for cloudiness in July of the current year, negative and significant for the average temperature in the months of November of the previous year and February of the current year and negative and significant in the months of November and December of the following year and the (iv) El Niño events presented a negative correlation in the rainiest months for the micro-region. Cedrela sp. of the micro-region of Óbidos, Pará is a species that is a marker of climate change.
