SUMMARY:

Soil, one of the most important elements of the agroecosystem and, generally, at greater risk, needs a lot of attention and conservation, due to its capacity to accumulate pollutants, serving as a natural filter to protect the quality of surface and subsurface waters and also reduce the risks of transferring pollutants into the food chain. Thus, the proposition of Quality Reference Values (QRV) represents a very important step towards the establishment of criteria for land use and management, aimed at environmental protection. Since these values define the natural quality of the soil and are obtained through the concentration of a substance measured in the soil, under conditions of low anthropic interference. This work aims to obtain QRV for the following trace elements: Boron – B; Selenium – If; Molybdenum – Mo; Arsenic – As; Vanadium – V; Antimony – Sb, and Silver – Ag for soils representative of the State of Rio de Janeiro. For this purpose, 540 samples from the soil bank of the Soil Chemistry and Pollution Laboratory of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro were used, collected in places without or with low anthropic interference, at two depths (0 – 20 cm and 20 – 40 cm), in the State of Rio de Janeiro, in order to estimate the pseudototal concentrations of elements B, Se, Mo, As, V, Sb and Ag. To determine the pseudototal contents, the EPA-3051A method was used, as standardized by CONAMA. From the results, Quality Reference Values were established, using univariate and multivariate statistical methods. The separation of the samples into two groups proved to be the most suitable for the soils of the state. Where G1 presents higher QRV for the 7 elements compared to G2, mainly related to the higher values of Fe, Al and clay in its composition. The Fe, Al and clay contents were the variables that had the greatest influence on the variation of the elements studied and, consequently, selected to compose the classification functions of the groups. We chose to use the 75th percentile in each group, seeking a more restrictive assessment. When compared with other values, the need to elaborate regional reference values is confirmed, due to great differences in the source material and the processes of soil formation in each region.
