SUMMARY:

Anaerobic digestion is a biotechnological process used for the treatment of organic waste and the production of renewable energy in the form of biogas and biofertilizers. The efficiency of this process depends directly on maintaining adequate operating conditions, with temperature being one of the parameters with the greatest influence on microbial activity, system stability, and biogas production. In this context, the objective of this study is to automate the monitoring and control of temperature in benchtop biodigesters. To achieve this objective, the proposed solution will be based on the use of low-cost temperature sensors integrated into an automation platform using the ESP32 microcontroller. The system will perform continuous acquisition of thermal data, automatic activation of heating devices, and storage of information on a Raspberry Pi embedded computer, allowing remote monitoring and traceability of experimental data. Benchtop biodigesters will be built and instrumented to evaluate the performance of the developed system. Experiments will be conducted that will include the operation of biodigesters with and without automatic temperature control, enabling the analysis of thermal stability in the mesophilic and thermophilic ranges, and the efficiency of the implemented control strategies. It is expected that the proposed solution will contribute to improving the operational conditions in experimental biodigesters, increasing the reliability of the data obtained and providing an accessible platform for future research involving the monitoring and automation of anaerobic digestion processes.
