SUMMARY:

The exploration and production of petroleum present one of the major environmental challenges associated with the generation of produced water (PW), a complex effluent composed of potentially toxic organic and inorganic compounds, including naphthenic acids and compounds belonging to the BTEX group (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes). These contaminants have significant environmental relevance due to their persistence, toxicity, and the difficulties associated with their removal by conventional treatment processes. In this context, the development of efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies becomes essential for the proper management of these effluents. This research aims to evaluate the applicability of biochars produced from sewage sludge and agricultural residues as adsorbent materials for the removal of naphthenic acids and BTEX compounds present in produced water generated from petroleum exploration activities. For this purpose, biochars will be produced through the pyrolysis process, with and without a chemical activation step, followed by the evaluation of their physicochemical characteristics and adsorption capacities. The obtained materials will be subjected to adsorption experiments using prepared aqueous solutions and real produced water samples, enabling the determination of adsorption parameters and optimal conditions for contaminant removal. Mathematical modeling of the adsorption process will be performed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM), allowing the identification of the influence of experimental variables on adsorbent performance, as well as the determination of biochars with high efficiency for the removal of recalcitrant organic compounds from produced water.
