With the increasing demand for water, and the inability of its use in natura due to its contamination by sanitary, industrial and agricultural sewers, added to the legal requirements regarding its disposal and reuse have contributed to the development of new technologies focused on the treatment of effluents. One of the alternatives for the treatment of cattle wastewater that is proving to be promising is the use of filters with different residues as a filter media. This work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of different filter media in the treatment of cattle wastewater. For this purpose, filter columns containing 60 cm in height and 150 mm in diameter were used with the respective filter media: maize cob and wood sawdust in the grain size range 2.38 to 4.00 mm, bamboo (medium size of 4 cm of height and 3 cm of diameter) and electrical steel slag in granulometry of 1,18 to 4,75 mm. For the evaluation of the efficiency of the system, the tributary and the effluent were characterized in relation to the following variables: chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS). All the filter media were efficient in the removal of COD and TSS. However, it was possible to verify that the COD removal efficiency was higher in the slag filter when compared to the others, reaching 50%. In the evaluation of the SST removal, the corn filter was the one that presented the best averages of removal efficiencies (81%).
