Spatial and edaphoclimatic analysis aiming at the Indication of Provenance of Cassava (manihot esculenta crantz) for the municipality of Japeri – RJ
geoprocessing, geographical indication, cassava, rural property
Cassava (also known as aipim, mandioca or macaxeira) is a deeply familiar plant to the Brazilian people, cultivated since before the arrival of the Portuguese. Initially mistaken for yam, cassava became a staple in the native diet. Currently, it is cultivated in many countries, with Nigeria leading production. Brazil ranks sixth in global cassava production. Cassava is versatile and adaptable, cultivated nationwide, and is one of the main agricultural products in terms of cultivated area and production value. Different regions of Brazil use the roots primarily for the production of flour and starch, in addition to consuming them fresh or as animal feed.
The Indication of Provenance (IP) in Brazilian legislation is part of Geographical Indications (GIs), aimed at protecting notable products and services that have gained recognition. The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) is responsible for the registration and recognition of GIs, aiming to identify and enhance Brazilian regional products. The implementation of a GI is an important collective tool for producers to promote their regional products and preserve the quality and prestige acquired over time.
The study area for this research is the municipality of Japeri, located in the State of Rio de Janeiro, a producer of aipim. According to information from the municipal portal, there are about 600 producers cultivating cassava, and in 2023, the first aipim festival (a municipal and tourist event) was held. Data collection will be conducted through online historical data platforms, scientific journals, and in-person interviews with representatives from the Japeri Agriculture Department and cassava farmers. Secondary data on the edaphoclimatic characteristics of the municipality will be obtained from online sites such as IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) and INMET (National Institute of Meteorology).
Using geoprocessing, remote sensing, and qualitative analyses of data provided by producers, this research aims to verify the physical and nutritional quality of Japeri's aipim. Based on these findings, actions will be developed to guide the municipality towards the possibility of obtaining the Indication of Provenance (part of the activities that guide the Geographical Indication) with INPI and the Japeri Rural Producers Union. This research aims to demonstrate the uniqueness of Japeri’s aipim and assist local producers in achieving Geographical Indication through the Indication of Provenance category.
