SUMMARY:

Climate change is intensified by CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels, creating an urgent need for sustainable alternatives. Third-generation biofuels, such as those derived from microalgae, mitigate these emissions through effluent bioremediation and CO₂ capture. A significant source of effluent is soybean milk production, which poses a threat to aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the cultivation of Chlorella sp. in soybean milk wastewater (SMW) for biodiesel production in Seropédica, RJ, Brazil. Six treatments were conducted: three without CO₂ addition and three with CO₂ supplementation at 2% v/v. Daily physical parameters, such as pH, temperature, and irradiance, were monitored, and the kinetics of wastewater treatment were analyzed by measuring total nitrogen (N_total), ammonium (NH₄⁺), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon (TOC). Lipid extraction and fatty acid analysis were performed to assess biodiesel quality. The treatments produced between 1.403 and 3.200 g·L⁻¹ of dry biomass and achieved 78–98% removal efficiency for N_total, NH₄⁺, COD, and TOC. The highest biomass composition was 51.67% proteins, 25.67% carbohydrates, and 12.24% lipids. The microalgae cultivation system reached a CO₂ biofixation rate of 44.96 t·year⁻¹. The biodiesel quality met national and international standards, including ASTM D6751 (2024) and ANP (2024). Treatments with PBR2CO₂ at 30 mL·L⁻¹ showed significant productivity and yields of biodiesel and bioethanol. These findings demonstrate that cultivating Chlorella sp. in PBRs using SMW is a promising solution for wastewater treatment and biofuel production, contributing to the global energy transition.
