SUMMARY:

This research project aims to analyze the potential and challenges of Local
History in Basic Education. Based on the memory of the Imperial Neighborhood of Santa
Cruz in Rio de Janeiro, it seeks to offer a new perspective for the practice of teaching and
learning beyond what is already offered by educational systems and their prescribed
curriculum. Through the sources and knowledge produced about the history of the Rio
neighborhood, I will seek to bring the practice of research and academic knowledge closer to
the school environment. In this process, the objects and nuances that go unnoticed, due to the
cultural burden to which students are currently subjected, can be observed in greater detail. As
a result, a didactic-cultural artifact is developed that assists teachers in their pedagogical
activity to develop teaching that is meaningful for students.
