RESUMO:

The availability of organic seeds with guaranteed quality is one of the most important factors in the organic agriculture productive chain. Due to the growing demand, organic certified seeds are highly valued in the organic production market and the high costs make it difficult for farmers who rely on legislation to continue producing with conventional seeds or saved materials. Most organic farmers of the Rio de Janeiro State do not use organic seeds on their properties. The major problem with conventional materials is that they are not cultivars adapted to organic management and the seeds saved by producers generally do not have quality because of technical misconceptions, especially in storage. The use of materials without guaranteed quality is one of the factors that compromise the productivity and success of smallholder farms. This seed production scenario may be a profitable alternative for smallholder producers, but there is a lack of technical assistance to promote this productive activity, clarifying the steps around the production and formalization process of accreditation and certification. The present study will analyze the current scenario of the organic seed production market in Brazil and the process of formalization of seed production. The quality analysis will also be carried out on seed lots of beans cv Alessa produced by PESAGRO-RIO with the objective to gather technical elements that will serve as the basis for the production of informative material to help farmers in the production of organic seeds in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
