SUMMARY:

The worldwide production and consumption of citrus fruits, including tangerine, showed a strong increase in the 1990s, when tangerine production expanded rapidly, with Brazil having achieved the fourth place in world production. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, with the expansion of tangerine plantations from the Coastal and Metropolitan regions to the Mountainous region in the 2000s, due to the good adaptation of the specie to the climate, the interest of the rural producer in the municipality of São José do Vale do Rio Preto (RJ) was noted in the cultivation of this fruit in the local sloping areas. With the increase in the planting area the demand for information related to the appropriate management to the local edaphoclimatic conditions grew, mainly considering that the municipality belongs to the state's “green belt area”, with high capital turnover and the influence of large pesticide resellers. In the absence of options for solving phytosanitary or nutritional problems, these producers end up being co-opted by the agrochemical industry. In order to reverse this trend, it is necessary to adopt a specific agro-ecological project for the cultivation of the Poncã tangerine in the municipality, which is environmentally sustainable and economically viable, which guarantees production, reduces energy expenditure with the use of external inputs and controls the use of synthetic inputs. For that, the joint work with the rural producer in the construction of tools that include strategies and use of indicators for decision-making regarding the management of culture can be used in line with the conservation of the ecosystem, using agroecological practices that result in a better balance of the production systems in which the Poncã tangerine is inserted. The dissertation proposal is to start with the mapping of planted areas and the systematization of information for the construction of informative material, a demand considered imperative as there is no literature of this nature specific to the municipality. Then, the research of the demands of the producer in a participative way and the construction of a didactic instrument to support the dissemination of agroecological strategies for the cultivation of Poncã tangerine in the municipality of São José do Vale do Rio Preto.
