SUMMARY:

Handling clinical and subclinical forms of mastitis is a massive challenge for dairy farms worldwide. Hygienic milking plays a major role to guarantee high quality milk, whether for in natura consumption or processing into dairy products. On-farm and laboratory analyses are routinely used to monitor the occurrence of these diseases, such as strip-cup test, California Mastitis Test (CMT), somatic cell count (SCC) and the standard plate count (SPC). Pre-dipping and post-dipping are critical steps in the hygienic collection of milk. This study aims to evaluate the replacement of commercial pre- and post-dipping solutions for Moringa oleifera powdered leaves alcoholic extract solution. Moringa oleifera is an Asian native plant widely known for its therapeutics effects, mainly anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and nutritional potential due its high levels of crude protein. In this assessment, comparisons will be made between the control group, using commercial dip solution, and treatment group using topical application of moringa extract solution. Strip-cup test, CMT, SCC and SPC will be performed for comparative  analyses and statistics tests run on results. The general objective of this work will be to evaluate the possibility of replacing commercial dip solutions by moringa alcoholic extract. Technical products developed will be an article, teaching material such as presentation folders and an event. The possibility of replacing commercial solutions with moringa alcoholic extract impacts on cost reduction for the dairy farmers and has great applicability due to ease change into the milking routine. This technology has great innovative potential because there is no description of this methodology in specialized literature related to dairy farming and its very low complexity.
