SUMMARY:

The increase in the agricultural production area in Brazil and the concentration of agriculture on grain crops generate consequences for the environment and the mode of rural production. The two biggest ones are: first, the scarcity of water generated by the high demand of the irrigated area, and second, the environmental degradation, resulting from the suppression of native vegetation cover and intensive cultivation practices. Faced with this scenario, a current of thought arises that seeks ways of growing food that are efficient in conserving water in the environment and that generate environmental benefits or the least possible negative impacts. In this context, this research seeks to analyze the environmental parameters that are indicators of water conservation in an agroforestry production area of the “forest garden” type. In addition, it seeks to raise the possibilities of bank financing for the activity. The work will be carried out at Sítio das Mangueiras in Florestal, MG and intends to analyze whether the forest garden system can generate environmental water benefits similar to forest areas. The evaluation of the environment based on soil moisture class, temperature, relative air humidity, infiltration and water retention in the soil will make it possible to test whether there are signs of environmental benefits from the adoption of the specific cultivation method. The proposed analyzes seek to deepen the discussion of the statement often linked to the motto of agroforestry courses: “water is planted”. The analysis of the financing possibilities of this mode of production aims to survey the conditions and step by step to obtain credit for this type of activity. As a result of the research, it is expected to prepare a specific document for the forest garden area, which is indicative and guiding how these systems can be characterized in relation to the use and conservation of water and a standard procedure that guides on how to obtain financing for this production model.
