The Municipal Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (SEMAP) of Itaguaí, in partnership with Embrapa, a food agroindustry, has become the first demonstration unit for growing biofortified foods in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Sweet potatoes, which have a higher beta-carotene content (pro-vitamin A), an important micronutrient for combating low body resistance and vision problems, are being included in the diet of patients at the local Municipal Hospital, nursing homes, children's and youth shelters, and the APAE institution. In fact, some producers from the region have been selected to grow these foods on their properties. The goal is to encourage the practice of urban agriculture, following the principles of organic cultivation, providing more nutritious food to the population, aiming to make up for possible deficiencies in the body. The Municipal Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is located in an area of approximately four hectares, where other projects are being developed to protect the environment and improve quality of life, including the organic production of vegetables and fruits, and agroecological production of eggs; both intended for distribution to health institutions in the municipal network. The location has the following coordinates as its central point: 22º52'45.66 S and 43º46'37.54 W, being 1 meter above mean sea level (MSL) and characterized as a tropical climate. Sweet potato crops will be grown in containers where types of organic fertilizer will be tested aiming at better productivity.
