SUMMARY:

The Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro stands out as the largest producer of vegetables in the state, based on conventional monoculture practices, with strong mechanization and use of synthetic inputs. This model is unsustainable and incompatible with mountain environments, and contributes to ecological imbalance and worsening climate change. Agroforestry systems (AFS) emerge as an option that combines ecological restoration and agricultural production. According to Law No. 12,651/2012, AFS are considered low-impact and socially interesting activities and can be implemented in protected areas on family farms, such as APP and Legal Reserve (RL). However, there are still doubts regarding models and typologies that restore the ecological functions of the area and meet the legal criteria. The objective of this dissertation project is to describe, for the first time, the Productive Restoration methodology and analyze it in a participatory manner with farmers linked to the Regenera Mata Atlântica Project in the Serrana Region of RJ. Productive Restoration consists of a systemic and multidisciplinary approach to implementing SAF, which encourages participation and values the knowledge of farmers, and is based on the principles of ecological restoration and agroecology, following the legal parameters required for protected areas (INEA Resolution No. 134/2016) and the technical regulation of organic agriculture (Law 10.831/2003; Ordinance No. 52/2021). 12 SAF units were implemented following the RP methodology, in the municipalities of Nova Friburgo, Teresópolis and São José do Vale do Rio de Preto. Qualitative and quantitative research techniques will be used, including bibliographic research, documentary analysis, case study, descriptive research and semi-structured interviews, in addition to analysis of implementation costs. The interview will aim to validate Productive Restoration among farmers who will be encouraged to freely express their opinions, list the positive and negative points, make comments and suggestions. Objectives, understanding of the methodology, learning and teachings, the level of satisfaction and difficulties encountered in management, as well as each person's perspective regarding the future of the implemented AFS will be investigated. As a result, it is expected to systematize and make available the validated Productive Restoration methodology, as well as identify opportunities and challenges for the expansion of AFS in family production units in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
