SUMMARY:

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a crop of great socioeconomic and food importance in Brazil, especially in the form of cassava or yuca for direct human consumption. The Santa Cruz region has a significant diversity of ethnovarieties cultivated by family farmers, but these ethnovarieties lack systematic studies that integrate morphological, sensory, and molecular aspects. This project aims to characterize cassava ethnovarieties cultivated in Santa Cruz, aiming to identify, document, and enhance local agrobiodiversity. To this end, morphological characteristics of the shoots, leaves, and roots will be evaluated using standardized descriptors, as well as sensory attributes such as flavor, texture, color, aroma, and cooking time through sensory panel tests. Simultaneously, molecular characterization will be performed using microsatellite markers to estimate genetic variability and establish similarity between varieties. The data obtained will be integrated into a technical and scientific catalog, containing detailed descriptions and illustrative images, which will serve as a tool for conservation, participatory improvement, and appreciation of traditional varieties. The results are expected to contribute to the preservation of the regional genetic heritage, promoting its sustainable use, and strengthening the cultural and productive identity of the Santa Cruz agricultural community.
