This work aimed to know the scenario of public technical vocational training in agroecology in the state of Rio de Janeiro, as a contribution to the mapping of institutional initiatives in this field of knowledge in the state. The research consisted of an inventory of secondary schools that offer agricultural and agroecology technical courses in the state, their geographical location, the current number of students enrolled in these courses, the modalities of supply, if the agricultural courses have the discipline of agroecology inserted in the curricular matrix, if the schools belong to the state network or the federal network, and, if it exists, the private education network. It also studied the case of Colégio Técnico da Universidade Rural (CTUR), pioneer in the creation of the technical course in agroecology in the state, privileged by its insertion in the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro and a partnership with Embrapa Agrobiology, and identified as a resistance project in the dismantling scenario of professionalizing public education in the field of agrarian sciences. Semi-structured questionnaires were applied with a sample of students of the course, in order to know the profile of the student and their expectations regarding their future professional performance. The study showed that the state of Rio de Janeiro presented figures still not very expressive regarding the professional qualification of young people in the area of agroecology, and of the total of 92 municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro, only two municipalities have institutions offering technical courses in Agroecology, Seropédica and Cambuci. The research identified that the students of CTUR are mostly adolescents from the city of Rio de Janeiro, 37% of whom reported being optimistic about their professional future, possibly expressing what scholars call a new rurality or having an expectation of work in the area of urban agriculture.
