RESUMO:

The main effort to collect information on ecosystems and the services it has provided so far has been the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), work carried out between 2001 and 2005, at the request of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The MA aims to provide an integrated assessment of the consequences of ecosystem change on human well-being as well as to analyze the options available for ecosystem conservation and their contribution to meeting human needs. The conceptual framework of the MA assumes that there is a dynamic interaction between people and ecosystems, with changes affecting ecosystem services and human well-being occurring reciprocally. It places human well-being at the heart of the assessment, but it also recognizes that biodiversity and ecosystems have intrinsic value and as such that decisions regarding ecosystems are based on both human its intrinsic value. The components of well-being, lived and perceived by people, are dependent on the situation, reflecting local geography, culture and ecological circumstances. Faced with growing pressure on ecosystems, various institutions and governments have sought to create incentives to improve the management of environmental assets. Ecosystem services are the benefits people derive from ecosystems and include provision services (such as food, drinking water, medical resources), regulation (such as flood protection), support (such as nutrient cycling), and cultural services (such as cultural heritage, recreation). This approach also considers the relationship between ecosystem services and the traditional way of life of human populations, and services can come from both natural ecosystems and from forests and agricultural environments managed by traditional peoples and communities. Landscape units associated with traditional farming systems have a high ecological value for their role in biodiversity conservation, as well as for their contribution to carbon sequestration and recreational services. The great concern of farmers, researchers and policy makers is the search for diversified, sustainable agricultural systems with low use of external and energy-efficient inputs. This requires that agriculture be seen as an ecosystem and that agricultural practices and research do not concern themselves with high levels of productivity, but rather with the optimization of the system as a whole. In the North of Minas Gerais, the quilombola community Gurutuba, object of this research, experiences a context of uncertainties and many expectations. Its trajectory in search of the recognition begins 2003 when a process of social mobilization and communitarian interventions for access to rights (land) and improvement of the conditions of life. In 2006, the administrative process for the land regularization of the territory was opened and the process is currently in the final phase of regulation at the federal level (Decree 4887). Several stages were overcome: elaboration of an anthropological report; family registers; self-delimitation of the territory (Publication of RTID-20/12/2013, case 54170.000533 / 2005-81); notification of non-quilombian squatters and deadlines for contestation. This project aims to collaborate in the elaboration of the Territorial and Environmental Management Plan, and the study to be carried out aims to "instrument quilombola communities in the identification of ecosystem services, characterization of landscape units and evaluation of plant species as bioindicators of strategies of use and occupation of Gurutuban soil ".
