SUMMARY:

This research proposes to investigate how elementary school students position themselves in situations involving real numbers in their different decimal forms using a calculator, seeking, in particular, to reflect on problem situations that occur with decimal numbers of the exact type/ approximate, infinite/finite and periodic/non-periodic. With the aim of intervening in the Teaching of Decimal Numbers with didactic pedagogical proposals, in particular on how this numerical field is introduced to Elementary School students, Mathematics textbooks were analyzed for the 5th and 6th years, the series in which they are introduced Decimal Numbers. Through the analysis of the teaching manuals, it was possible to identify the strategies used by the authors to introduce the fraction and decimal number. The field research for this work will take place in a public school located in the city of Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, involving a 6th year elementary school class. The objectives of this dissertation are based on “how” and “why” in relation to the students’ positioning in the face of the proposed problem, therefore this work has a qualitative nature, using a case study. With the results, an educational product will be created, yet to be defined in detail, with suggestions for teachers who teach mathematics in Basic Education.
