SUMMARY:

This research project proposes to useNature Trails in integrated activities in formal learning spaces. The main objective is to analyze the methodology of thematic investigation by delimiting possible Generating Themes in a socially critical Environmental Education proposal. The investigation will be carried out per research action method in which the researcher is a participating and active member throughout the investigative process. As non-formal learning spaces in a planned harmonious relationship with formal learning spaces, the trails provide opportunities for reflection about social environmental issues that impact the participants in this dynamic.  Such reflection is essential for the decision-making process and the overcoming of the relationships that maintains social inequalities. The research subjects are members of the school community of a public high school located in the town of Piraí. This research will involve 3 stages. The first has already been accomplished by the review of literature for clarification of concepts related to the kinds of spaces devoted to education. In the second stage, we conducted a systematic review of Trails in Brazil. The last stage, which had been previously interrupted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, deals with a Field Research both in the selected school and Mata do Amador Trail, located in Mata do Amador city park in Piraí. The preliminary results point out that non-formal learning spaces can help Environmental Education achieve the goals proposed by the Brazilian legislature if they are used in a well-planned manner. It is also believed that the macrotrend in Environmental Education in critical thinking is the approach that can lead to real and profound change in society. As a result, we will create a pedagogical tourist booklet which can be used by other teachers in the city in activities with similar learning goals to the ones proposed here.  By doing this research, we wish to have the following question answered: Will the application of Generating Themes obtained through thematic investigation within the context of a socially critical Environmental Education incorporating school and Nature Trails be able to encourage reflection about significant environmental issues to the community and contribute to effective action for change?
