SUMMARY:

Throughout my teaching career in the early years of elementary school, it has become evident that many teachers face difficulties in teaching content that demands greater conceptual depth, especially in the field of mathematics. This scenario motivated the present investigation, which focuses on the teaching of algebra in the early years—a component introduced more systematically by the Brazilian National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC). The inclusion of algebraic thinking in this segment has raised doubts and insecurities among teachers, despite its relevance for identifying regularities, establishing relationships, describing patterns, and justifying ideas. Given this context, this study aims to understand how tasks based on sequences can mobilize generalization processes and, consequently, favor the development of algebraic thinking in the early years. This is a qualitative research study that uses data from the IDEB (Basic Education Development Index) as a reference, as well as the skills foreseen in the BNCC, to analyze which proposed activities involving sequences can contribute to the training of teachers who teach mathematics in the municipal school system of Nova Iguaçu. By proposing differentiated pedagogical practices, such as the use of manipulable materials, games, and investigative tasks, the aim is not only to expand teachers' didactic repertoire but also to promote more meaningful teaching, capable of engaging both teachers and students. Thus, the goal is for students to develop greater conceptual understanding and attribute meaning to mathematical learning, mobilizing diverse forms of thought, including algebraic thinking.
