SUMMARY:

Faced with the current scenario that we are experiencing of a great environmental crisis, which threatens life, even of us human beings, it is necessary a teaching practice that prioritizes the development ofstudents a reflective, critical, questioning and investigative posture about the world in which live and the awareness of the importance of exercising citizenship. This work has as objective research the contributions of an activity book to the process of building the scientific knowledge of students in a third year high school class, subjects of research, from Colégio Estadual São João, located in the city of Queimados, RJ. That pedagogical material, called For Environmental Literacy in Schools, addresses the theme Environmental Education from the perspective of Scientific Literacy. both authors dialogue with Freire's thoughts in a humanizing vision of the world that allows you to see and understand the socio-environmental reality and then transform it. It is a qualitative research that involves the collection of data through a questionnaire to survey the students' previous conceptions and divided into three axes: Meaning the Environment, which has the purpose of verifying the concepts that students have on the environment; Environment and its problems, which aims to analyze the vision what students have about the environmental problems of the place where they live and their causes; Life Cotidiana e Ambiente, which wants to investigate the relationship of students on a day-to-day basis with the environment environment. The first analyzes of the questionnaire show that the theme “environment”, although it is essential to the life of every human being, it is known superficially or even itself is the result of a mistaken association. The analysis of the students' responses brought important elements that allowed to deepen the theme of this research and guide the elaboration carrying out activities in class on the topic that become part of the activity book. THE performing these activities will generate a second set of data obtained through the written and verbal records of students. The booklet For Environmental Literacy in the Schools has activities aimed at the active participation of students, the exchange of knowledge, reflection on environmental issues seeking solutions and behavior change to transform socio-environmental problems.
