STUDENTS OF THE 9TH YEAR OF BASIC EDUCATION EXPLORE SITUATIONS WITH IRRATIONAL NUMBERS PI AND FI.
Exploratory tasks; numerical construction; mathematical writing; interaction
The didactic approach of irrational numbers in textbooks always presents itself from some examples without, however, discussing the specific characteristics and differentiating them from the other numbers worked up until then. This research aimed to address two irrational numbers in particular, the numbers (fi) e (pi), for which tasks were elaborated in which students needed to compare measures and calculate their value by approximations and comparisons between different measures. In this sense, this research aims to discuss and analyze the dialogues and written productions of primary school students (second segment) about the construction of these numbers in a context of exploratory activities. Its focus is on the construction of the concept of students of Basic Education and aims to subsidize the work of teachers who want to follow an alternative proposal of teaching mathematics and stimulate them to perceive the relevance of the theme. The research methodology is based on the Design Based Research (DBR), based on a bibliographical survey consisting of: two official documents, the National Curricular Parameters and the National Curricular Common Base, articles that deal with the theme, and a survey in textbooks used in school in which the research was developed. Next we elaborate the tasks that would be implemented for a group of students of the 9th year of the Elementary School of a public school. After the elaboration of the first version of the tasks, these were applied and their answers analyzed in order to verify if they needed to be revised or not. Data collection was done through the researcher's field diary, activity sheets and audio and video recorded from the group work. The analysis is oriented in the construction of the concept of irrational numbers and considered the referral given by the group and the strategies used by the students to solve the problems. The research foresees two important moments: the first one, in which the students' profile was sought from an introductory task regarding what students think about number and the re-elaboration of the tasks thought in a first version, the second predicts, from the analysis, a didactic guide for teachers. Regarding the results, we observed that the task-ready scripts contributed to a significant learning about the irrational numbers, with emphasis on φ and π. In any case, this research aims to recover, independently of errors and correctness, the pleasure to study and stimulate the curiosity of adolescents to study mathematics.
