Considering the current context that demands an adequate education in science and the emptying of this area of knowledge in the early years of elementary school, this study aims to analyze the contributions of a workbook that addresses the theme body, gender and life for process of building the scientific knowledge of students in a 4th grade class. Elementary school year of a public school. For the organization of this pedagogical material and further development in the classroom, I base myself on the perspective of scientific literacy proposed by Chassot (2003) and meaningful learning addressed by Coll (2002), since science consists of a language, and for to understand it is necessary to be scientifically literate so that concepts that we can make use of it consciously and not memorably. Scientific literacy aims at social inclusion. But in order to enable scientific literacy we highlight the need for students to learn meaningfully and are able to build and assign meaning to what is being taught. From this theoretical perspective the previous knowledge of the students gains relevance. This qualitative study has been conducted at a public school in the city of Queimados, located in Baixada Fluminense, Rj. Taking as study subjects the students of the 4th grade alpha of elementary school, who are still in the process of literacy. Consistent with the theoretical-methodological perspective, the organization of the workbook will have as its starting point the students' previous conceptions on the theme Body, gender and life. For this, two activities were performed to identify how students perceive their bodies and the bodies of boys and girls. In the first analyzes of these two activities, we identified that students' previous knowledge about the body manifested differentiated aspects such as fragmentation, stereotypes that are scientifically and culturally rooted. Thus, this fragmentation prevents students from understanding that the human body is not in pieces and is not a machine either. The body is a whole that depends on the proper functioning between its parts. The human body is realized when the biological aspects are added to those of social, cultural and affective orders. Hence the importance of a proposal that addresses the body in broader perspectives.
