SUMMARY:

The research “Ethnomathematics and Quilombola School Education on Marambaia Island in Mangaratiba-RJ: Connections between Local Crafts and School Practice”, constitutes a qualitative investigation, with ethnographic characteristics. The theoretical foundation is based on Ethnomathematics, Decolonial Pedagogy and Liberating Pedagogy. The research methods and techniques used were: semi-structured interviews, participant observation, field diary, and document analysis. The study reflects on the relationship between the appreciation of popular knowledge produced by the remaining quilombolas of Ilha da Marambaia, through local crafts and the academic knowledge taught by the school. The research sought to demonstrate that this knowledge can dialogue with each other. The main arguments are that the valorization of each of these types of knowledge, in its own way, and the non-hierarchization between them, favor and help the process of formation of the local cultural identity. The possibilities of articulating local cultural practices and mathematical knowledge are immense, but it is necessary to be willing to listen to the voices, stories, struggles and feelings of the group with which one works. The central problem of this research is: How Ethnomathematics can contribute to this process, approaching the practice of handicrafts produced by local residents and a proposal for a didactic sequence that allows students to also participate in an investigative process. Finally, the main variables of the research are identity, culture, local knowledge and crafts.
