SUMMARY:

The research developed here stems from the dialogue between Humanist Geography and the novel “The Hour of The Star”, by writer Clarice Lispector.  A novel that features Macabéa as the protagonist, she is a 19-year-old Northeastern woman who leaves the Alagoas backlands pursuing a new life in the city of Rio de Janeiro. However, the history of this character, as we defend in this research, is marked by a strong topophobic feeling (RELPH, 1979), because she feels like not belonging to anywhere, a true life of anonymous misery. The novel denounces Macabéa's invisibility/social alienation, which goes through the issues of migration, housing, work, culture and human relations permeated by conflicts, and due to these issues topophobia is built in the character's trajectory. Thus, we say that Macabéa makes geography incarnated by her own movements throughout places, in the midst of her fears and existential conflicts, moving towards what Dardel (2011) calls as "geographicity" (géographicité). From this perspective, as stated in the title – Topophobic places on Macabéa's trajectory – it is a humanistic/phenomenological research, after all, human existence is the basic condition for geography, since there is no place without people and people are moved by emotions, by the subjectivity of their bodies and by the conformation of their places, as Yi-Fu Tuan (1980; 1983; 1985) discusses through his works. Thus, the main objective of this research is to analyze the perceptions of the place from the geographical experiences lived by the character, demarcating the topophobic trajectory of Macabéa in the context in which she is situated, both spatially and temporally in the novel. Therefore, the methodology follows the phenomenological precepts of Humanist Geography, as well as through "Discursive Textual Analysis" [Análise Textual Discursiva - ATD (MORAES; GALIAZZI, 2016)], for the process of breaking and deconstructing the novel, in fragments, for the reconstruction of another text, here through the gaze of Geography. And for this methodological process, we divided the novel into three parts, being – the first moment in which Macabéa finds herself in the Alagoas backlands; second moment – when Macabéa migrates to the city of Rio de Janeiro and, the third moment / novel outcome – when the northeastern woman goes visit a fortune teller. In possession of the aforementioned methodology, the aim is to infer from the novel the necessary intersubjectivity for understanding all geographical experiences lived by Macabéa. Upon reading the novel, this research offers as a result, the topophobic place that was perceived, lived, and built by the character, which shows an example of a literary work, which although not committed to reality, it can help us due to its verisimilitude, since literature is a way for the author to describe the world. Through Geography, it helps us with the investigation of the places in which Macabéa transits, being marked by fear - of herself, of the unknown and of Rio de Janeiro. It is a timeless novel in terms of social issues, regarding the migration of northeasterners, work opportunities and social exclusion, which justifies the research proposed here, on the tracks of a Literary Geography. This geography is an invitation to everyone who appreciates reading and who turns that into an investigative practice to think and reflect on the geographic reality.
