SUMMARY:

The study area of this dissertation includes the region known as Baixada Fluminense,
which includes 13 municipalities in the State of Rio de Janeiro, which surround the capital of the
Rio de Janeiro, forming the metropolitan periphery, which is marked by stereotypes attributed
to social and economic issues in the region, especially violence, poverty and degradation
environmental. Such characteristics reflect on the conservation and visibility of the protected areas of this
region, which has 77 Conservation Units (CUs), 52 municipal, 12 state and
13 feds. Faced with the large number of CUs, which mostly represent
remnants of the Atlantic Forest Biome, stand out for the numerous ecosystem services
offered, in addition to safeguarding a rich biodiversity, making it essential to debate
about ways to increase the conservation of these spaces, as ways to make them visible. In that
In this sense, this research aims to discuss the factors that drive the invisibility of CUs
peripheral areas and the role of environmental educommunication in the visibility and conservation of areas
protected in the Baixada Fluminense. To subsidize this debate, a database was built
based on information made available mainly on the ICMBio and INEA websites, in addition to
official disclosure pages of the Baixada Fluminense UCs. When analyzing the data, it was
possible to understand some harmful factors to the conservation of these spaces, as well as to the
its use when permitted. Thus, it was observed that an alternative to reverse this
invisibility scenario is to encourage society to become active in conservation, i.e.,
play a leading role in conservation, strengthening the sense of belonging to the
nature. Thus, environmental education and environmental educommunication if worked in
together can offer subsidies for the viability of these spaces, contributing to their
conservation.
