SUMMARY:

The concept of standard of quality of life is formed by a set of factors to assess and measure the well-being of an individual or group. Among these factors, one can mention the time spent commuting to work, leisure and culture, quality hospital services, comfort and good housing, living close to green areas and parks, among countless other issues (NOBRE, 1995).
Of the external factors, there is the quality of the air, which, in addition to providing a benefit to physical and mental health, modifies the entire environment around it, whether material, human or animal. And over time, longevity has been gaining a significant increase. So, for this to continue, it is necessary to take care not only of yourself, but of the place where we live.
The Earth's atmosphere contains gases that support life, due to its composition and behavior. Protection from ultraviolet rays – which are harmful if they fall directly on humans – breathing and photosynthesis are some of the processes carried out by the atmosphere. It also contains nitrogen gases (78.09%), oxygen (20.95%), argon (0.93%), carbon dioxide (0.035%), among others with even lower percentages (DIAS; ANDRADE NETO; MILTÃO , 2007). All this structure allows the life of human beings and the environment (plants and animals).
Over the last few decades, there has been an exponential technological advance. Linked to this development, there are interconnections of areas of knowledge, that is, technology helping and improving areas of health, environment, monitoring, land use and cover, among many others. Added to this is the emergence of microcontrollers, such as the Arduino with low cost and easy access.
With this technological aid, it has been possible to observe and monitor environmental conditions, with regard to the atmospheric issue. Monitoring air quality has gained importance in recent decades due to the increase in pollution and its impact on human health.
In view of the above, the present research has the general objective of analyzing costs, benefits and the reliability of the measurement of a low-cost monitoring sensor for air quality, when compared to environmental sensing equipment of different sizes, currently available on the market.
The sensor was designed, built and configured within the Low Cost Sensing Network project for Monitoring Hydrometeorological Data and Flood Alerts, coordinated by Professor Tiago Marino, and with the support of LiGA (Integrated Laboratory of Physical Geography/UFRRJ) and AGEVAP (Pro-Management Association of Waters in the Hydrographic Basin of the Paraíba do Sul River).
