NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY AS A TOOL FOR RAISING AWARENESS AND DISSEMINATION OF UNITS
CONSERVATION OF BAIXADA FLUMINENSE
Biogeography, Environmental Perception, Citizen Science, Geophotography,
Educommunication.
This research involves five Protected Areas pertaining to the Baixada Fluminense region,
specifically to the municipalities of Seropédica, Queimados, Nova Iguaçu and Mesquita,
beyond to part of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The Protected Areas are: Floresta
Nacional Mário Xavier, APA Horto Municipal Luiz Gonzaga de Macedo, Parque Estadual do
Mendanha, APA do Gericinó-Mendanha e Parque Natural Municipal de Nova Iguaçu. The
Protected Areas of Baixada Fluminense suffer from many stereotypes and end up being made
invisible, even though they are part of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro. By giving
new perspectives, the scenarios can change and finally these spaces can be valued by the
population, both for the ecosystem services provided, as well as for their conservation and for
harboring an immense biodiversity. In the sense of transmuting, photography has gained more
and more visibility and importance, mainly due to the power of uniting individual feelings
lived in an experience. With regard to the objective of the work, the purpose is to explore
photography as a tool for the conservation and scientific dissemination of these spaces, as
well as an art that can create new networks, by making the connection between society, public
authorities and the academic community. The work was initially elaborated with the
bibliographic survey within the concepts of landscape, photography, conservation, citizen
science and environmental perception. The methodology is based on qualitative methods of
citizen science and action research, with the creation of a photographic competition
concomitantly with field work in the mentioned Protected Areas, in order to photograph
nature and experience these places. With the photographs taken by the author of this research
and with the combination of photographs taken by the population, a virtual exhibition was
organized, with subsequent application of a questionnaire to visitors to better understand their
socio-environmental perceptions from the use of photography in the research. Through the
analysis of the creation of the competition and the activities carried out, it was possible to
perceive how much working with art in Conservation Units can help in changing how the
population sees these spaces. In addition, digital media can be valuable tools for science by
bringing the population closer together. Thus, it was verified that combining education and
environmental awareness with citizen science contributes to the dissemination of protected
areas, increases public use, enables new networks in different spheres, in addition to
strengthening the sense of belonging of those involved, sensitizing society to protect the
biodiversity of the Protected Areas that surround them.
