Study of the environment, Socio-environmental problems, Geography teaching, Citizenship.
Faced with a scenario where the increase in socio-environmental problems arise as a result of the current disorderly population growth and irregular occupation, and a large portion of the population has been living under precarious conditions of life and urban mobility, such as the contamination of water sources by sewage and garbage, silting up of rivers and streams, among others, this research aims to analyze the relevance of the Study of the Environment within Geography, in the elaboration of an Environmental Education and Gardening Project developed with students of the 7th year of Elementary School, which prioritizes the search, collectively, solutions for socio-environmental problems, based on the construction of social values that favor the formation of citizenship, in addition to knowledge, skills, attitudes and competences aimed at preserving the environment, quality of life and its sustainability in the Neighborhood Prados Verdes, in Nova Iguaçu/RJ, where the Pera Flor Municipal School is located. Analyzing the students' view of their lived reality in order to develop a critical and participatory posture in those involved is also part of this proposal, which based its reference on theorists, such as Cavalcanti (2012), Pontuschka (2004, 2007), Kozel (1998, 2007) and Callai (2011). Its development used as resources and strategies, guided conversations, interviews, approach to programmatic contents, geotechnology applications, in addition to the production of mental maps. The results demonstrated the relevance of the Study of the Environment methodology linked to the teaching of Geography, in the effectiveness of Environmental Education, which enabled the contextualization of reality, providing understanding and developing criticality in students, with effective transformation and re-signification of space.
