SUMMARY:

Cartography is the science that studies the different approaches and techniques that make it possible to represent geographical space. The research discusses the potential of school cartography, a language for teaching geography through the construction and use of mental maps, including geographical concepts worked on in a reflective and critical way, considering the context in which students and the school are inserted. In this context, the public basic education school in Brazilian society, in its social function of preserving equity and basic training for citizens, must offer the skills and competencies necessary for their all-round development. The general aim of this research is to analyze how school cartography is taught based on the representation of space through mind maps produced by students in the 6th grade of elementary school II at Escola Municipal Professora Iramar da Costa Lima Miguel, in Nova Iguaçu, RJ. The r esearch methodology is qualitative, valuing the subjectivity and learning of the student, using as a theoretical-methodological foundation researchers in school cartography and geography teaching, as well as normative documents such as the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC), Curriculum Proposal of the Municipality of Nova Iguaçu (PCMNI) and the Political Pedagogical Project (PPP) of the school unit, based on a discussion about the importance of knowing the place, the neighborhood where you live, the neighborhood of Riachão, Nova Iguaçu, RJ. We conceptualized school cartography and its importance for teaching geography, as well as the methodology of the mental map, which allows the expression of subjectivity through drawings. We also observed the relationship between drawing and pictographs as being favorable to the process of learning cartographic language, even for students who are still in the process of becoming literate in graphic language, The drawings and pictographs associate the playful with the concrete, enabling greater understanding, as well as the exchange of knowledge and interest. We can see that the mental maps produced express the daily lives and experiences of the students taking part in the research, and promote the interdisciplinarity of various curricular components based on the mental maps developed. The diversity presented in the mental maps of the route from home to school made it possible to get to know the place, the neighborhood where one lives and also the feeling of belonging, as well as understanding situations that occur in the place.
