SUMMARY:

Landscape, a fundamental category of geographic studies, is the materialization of the relationship between human beings and nature based on the transformation and appropriation of natural elements. Anthropogenic transformations on the Earth's surface are inherent to human activities, resulting from the evolution of techniques. In the field of biogeography and ecology, the novels ecosystems emerge as a category of analysis that addresses the creation of ecosystems from anthropogenic actions. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the formation of a novel ecosystem by the analysis of the evolution of the landscape of the area that today comprises the Floresta Nacional Mário Xavier (Flona MX), since the creation of the Horto Florestal de Santa Cruz in the 1940s until the context current, considering the history of land use and occupation, the introduction of exotic species, the natural regeneration of vegetation and recent reforestation actions, in order to understand the processes that constituted the current characteristics. The specific objectives seek to analyze whether Flona MX presents the necessary characteristics that enable its classification as a new ecosystem; understand Flona MX as a new ecosystem or as a set of ecosystems; identify the agents and processes responsible for the changes that occurred over the defined time scale. The methodological framework of the research presents two paths: the first will be based on analysis of the evolution of the landscape through photographs and historical records that are part of the conservation unit's collection, dated in the 40s and 50s, which will be compared with the current state of the landscapes through fieldwork and new photographic records. The second will consist of analyzing the evolution of the landscape through maps of land use and occupation with the following time intervals: 1985, 1995, 2005, 2015 and 2023 and considering the following classes: mixed vegetation cover, eucalyptus vegetation, built area, deforested area, pasture, roads and pathways. Google Earth Engine software and Landsat 8 satellite images will be used to prepare the cartographic products. The characterization of Flona MX as a new ecosystem (or as a set of ecosystems) will occur after analyzing the evolution of the landscape to investigate whether the area corresponds to the theoretical assumptions to which this research is based. The expected results will be organized into three subchapters: Analysis of Landscape Evolution Through Historical and Photographic Records, Analysis of Landscape Evolution through Land Use and Cover Maps and Evidence of the Formation of a Novel Ecosystem (or Novels Ecosystems) in Flona MX. Flona MX is a sustainable use conservation unit, with na área of 496 hectares, located in the municipality of Seropédica, metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. It is part of the select group of national forests existing in Brazil and is one of the few forested fragments in the municipality, the target of several challenges arising from human pressure. Its importance materializes in several areas: provision of ecosystem services, space for environmental education and leisure, “laboratory” for scientific research, in addition to being essential for preserving and enhancing the Seropédica’s environmental history.
