SUMMARY:

The dissertation addresses the growing relevance of urban heat islands, with a specific focus on the city of Nova Iguaçu, located in the Metropolitan Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Initially, it highlights the importance of new methodologies and technologies that geographic science can further appropriate, as they broaden discussions and enable significant advances in understanding urban space. The focus is on the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with thermal cameras to capture thermal data from certain areas of the city's surface and thus deepen knowledge about the urban climate of Nova Iguaçu. This not only allows for understanding this phenomenon but also paves the way for innovative solutions in an already consolidated topic in the sciences. In this sense, the geographical analyses presented go beyond mere quantification and point towards more holistic and innovative approaches. The study emphasizes that urban heat islands are intrinsic phenomena to urban areas, resulting from the complex interaction between physical and social factors. Thus, it is considered essential not only to address the heat island as a meteorological phenomenon but also as a reflection of social choices and the development model adopted in urban areas. The dissertation highlights the importance of Nova Iguaçu as a strategic study location, given its dense urban population and peculiar climatic characteristics. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need to understand the dynamics of heat islands to promote more sustainable and resilient urban environments. The research, organized into three parts, addresses the theoretical framework (with the search for concepts and geographic data and other sciences that address the keywords of this research), the urban panorama of Nova Iguaçu, and the results of the data analysis. In summary, research in Nova Iguaçu not only expands knowledge of the topic but also provides relevant information for decision-making and implementation of actions aimed at mitigating the effects of this phenomenon in urban areas using UAVs.
