SUMMARY:

For Geography education to achieve its goals, it is essential to adopt methodologies that prioritize knowledge construction and are connected to students' realities. In this context, teaching Geography through the concepts of place and landscape is a relevant approach, as it helps students develop a critical understanding of their surroundings. Motivated by the negative stigma and dismissive comments from students themselves, such as calling Japeri "ugly," the research posed the question: Is it possible to change this negative perception and make classes more engaging by using Japeri’s landscapes? This study aims to analyze the landscape potential of Japeri, a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro, to serve as a resource for teaching Geography to sixth-grade students in local public schools. Given that Japeri is a peripheral area in the Baixada Fluminense region and lacks sufficient educational materials addressing its specific characteristics, the research focused on analyzing local landscapes to be used as teaching tools. The theoretical framework draws on the concept of landscape from the perspective of Cultural Geography, referencing Sauer (1925), Berque (1984), and Cosgrove (1989), who explore themes like perception, human experiences, and meanings. Additionally, Yi-Fu Tuan’s (1980) concept of topophilia—the emotional and sentimental connection to one's living environment—provides a basis for understanding the role of place. The methodology follows Penteado's (2010) Teaching-Research approach, emphasizing the transformation of personal praxis and the exploration of the teaching-learning process. A questionnaire was administered to sixth-grade students to understand their perceptions of Japeri. Subsequently, an activity using Japeri’s landscapes was developed and applied, utilizing the StoryMap tool from ArcGIS Hub. The activity was accompanied by a detailed analysis of a related questionnaire, revealing positive outcomes. The students, who were the target audience of this proposal, expressed appreciation for the use of StoryMap. This approach not only made them value their local area more but also strengthened their emotional connection to it and enhanced their awareness of its importance.
