The Territorial Ascension of Female Pastorship in Nova Iguaçu/RJ: a feminine perspective of Evangelicals
Territory; Nova Iguaçu; Baixada Fluminense; Women's pastorate; evangelicals.
Brazil, being a historically Catholic country, has experienced a remarkable growth of evangelicals in recent decades, among whom women have emerged as leaders in spaces that were exclusively designed for the male gender. In light of the increase in churches led by women, the general objective of the research is to analyze the territorial rise of female pastorship in the Cacuia neighborhood of Nova Iguaçu/RJ, in the face of structural machismo and patriarchally consolidated norms within the Pentecostal milieu. The methodology is qualitative, involving a review of the theoretical framework on the topic, and the application of interviews with the subjects of the research, who are evangelical pastors and leaders of Pentecostal religious communities. In the field of the Geography of Religion, the phenomenon has drawn the attention of some researchers such as Silva (2010) and Miranda (2009); the rise of female pastorship leads us to understand this phenomenon as an act of restructuring or remodeling a masculine territory, giving rise to female power. The emerging voice of women in these spaces urges researchers to uncover the reasons that led to the ministerial flexibility of female leadership, as well as whether and how machismo manifests itself in the churches of the Pentecostal movement. Even in the face of such exclusion, some spaces where management was male proved to be inclusive and even advocates for women's ministry. On the other hand, a significant number of reports of prejudice coming from the women themselves was identified. Overall, the female pastoral ministry has not been a movement of resistance against structural machismo, because female leaders do not confront the problem directly; they only defend themselves or limit themselves to questioning it. However, the research brings important contributions to the topic, revealing some peculiarities and exclusive reports from certain interviews, which opened pathways to interpret many questions raised in other works.
