SUMMARY:

Water is a fundamental resource for life and the development of societies, but its availability and distribution are marked by historical inequalities, economic interests, and increasingly intense environmental impacts. In a context characterized by recurring water crises, disordered urban expansion, and privatization pressures on essential services, thinking about access to water implies understanding not only its natural dimension, but also its social, territorial, and political dimensions. Therefore, it becomes necessary to adopt sustainable measures that promote the rational use of water resources and reduce dependence on centralized supply systems.

This work analyzes the feasibility of implementing a rainwater harvesting and utilization system at the Multidisciplinary Institute of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (IM/UFRRJ), located in Nova Iguaçu. The research involved studying the building's infrastructure, surveying water consumption, analyzing technical and legal constraints, and preparing an estimated budget based on public references. Considering the budgetary and structural constraints, the initial implementation of a pilot system in a single block is proposed, allowing for monitoring, performance evaluation, and adjustments before its expansion.

The results indicate that the system is technically feasible and potentially efficient in reducing potable water consumption and the institution's operating costs. Furthermore, the adoption of this initiative strengthens sustainability practices, stimulates environmental awareness in the academic community, and demonstrates the role of public universities in promoting innovative and low-impact socio-environmental solutions.
