SUMMARY:

The Mário Xavier National Forest (FLONA MX) is a Conservation Unit (UC) located in the municipality of Seropédica, in the Metropolitan Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The UC, currently under shared management with UFRRJ, is not only a place for environmental education but also holds great social and historical importance for the local population, contributing to their quality of life. In this context, the present study focuses on complementing the environmental education experience that takes place in FLONA MX by conducting historical, ecological, and biogeographical research on the region, with the aim of producing a Story Map and Story frames containing multimedia files that will assist in sharing the history of the species and the different geomorphological formations within the FLONA. Links to the developed virtual materials will be available along the FLONA MX trails in the form of QR codes, printed on signs with specific information that will be installed at reference points to be carefully established throughout the project.

According to the Mário Xavier National Forest Management Plan (2022), the Conservation Unit currently faces challenges already known from other historical periods, such as: invasion by grazing animals, removal and cutting of vegetation, nocturnal hunting, and sweeping of fallen leaves for use in religious practices in some regions. In addition, there are pressures generated by urban expansion, such as the discharge of sewage into the Unit's water bodies, dumping of domestic waste, illegal fishing, logging, and depredation of public property. The Mario Xavier National Forest constitutes a heritage, not only for biodiversity but also for the city's population, being an environment for environmental education, leisure, and contemplation of the landscape. In this context, the "Shared Management of the Mario Xavier National Forest" Project (GCFNMX) acts as a mediator in disseminating scientific information about the Conservation Unit to the community of Seropédica, receiving groups of students from public schools in the municipality and proposing pedagogical interventions in the informal learning space (SILVA, 2022). [LM1]

The in-situ educational activities of the Shared Guard FLONA MX were interrupted in the context of the social isolation generated by the Sars-COV2 pandemic. Given the impossibility of continuing with in-person educational activities, a Story Map about the protected area was structured, mediated through live streams on YouTube for the project's target audience (MACHADO, et al., 2022). This work utilizes a Digital Information and Communication Technology (DICT) to promote environmental education through points along the biogeographic trail built by the GCFNMX, as well as valuing exotic and native species present in the habitat.

This research project aims to develop a scientific dissemination and environmental education material in Story Map format containing the historical and biogeographic aspects of the Mario Xavier National Forest. Furthermore, what differentiates the Story Map proposed in this work from the one previously developed by the GCFNMX is the chronological extent of the historical data series, the level of detail and diversity of the information offered, the GIS software used for the production of the material – as well as its resources – and the use of species distribution data that occur in the FLONA in order to explain the different ecological niches and climatic conditions that the species in question need to live. In this way, the material developed at the end of the project would complement the Protected Area Management Plan, promoting environmental education, as well as disseminating its importance for biodiversity and promoting ecotourism for the population of the Baixada Fluminense region.
