Spatial analysis of physical activity practices among faculty and administrative staff at UFRRJ-Seropédica Campus

Regular physical activity plays a fundamental role in promoting health and reducing the risk of
developing chronic diseases. Considering that a large part of the population dedicates a
significant portion of their time to commuting and/or work activities, these conditions can
directly impact several aspects of daily life. In this context, the Longitudinal Study of the
Determinants of Physical Activity (ELDAF), completed in 2024, analyzes the personal,
behavioral, and environmental factors associated with physical activity among faculty and
administrative staff at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). Although the
study was conducted across all four university campuses, this research focuses specifically on
the Seropédica campus. The investigation follows a geographical approach, using
geoprocessing tools to spatialize data and understand the relationship between health, quality
of life, and physical activity. In the methodological stage, the ELDAF data were processed
using QGIS 3.34 software, considering the variables: Postal Code (CEP), physical activity
practiced in the last three months, professional activity performed, and proximity of residence
to locations conducive to physical activity. Based on this information, the distance between the
CEP of the staff and the UFRRJ Institutes, Seropédica campus, was calculated. Partial results
indicate that administrative staff have a higher proportion of engagement in physical activities
compared to faculty, possibly due to the shorter distance between their residences and
workplaces. Among the three physical activities selected (walking, weight training, and
running), walking is the most common among staff. A balance in physical activity is also
observed between men and women, although the number of male staff is higher. These results
highlight the importance of public policies and urban planning strategies aimed at promoting
more active lifestyles.
