ASSESSMENT OF ASYMMETRIES IN BASIC SANITATION IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE RIO DE JANEIRO METROPOLITAN REGION: MAPPING USING SOCIAL INDICATORS

This research investigates the inequalities in access to basic sanitation in the outskirts of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (RMRJ), with an emphasis on a geosystemic analysis of the territory. Based on a critical approach grounded in theories of territory and the right to the city, the study seeks to understand the asymmetries in the distribution of potable water and sewage services in vulnerable areas. The research combines the use of social indicators and geoprocessing techniques to construct thematic maps that highlight spatial exclusion patterns. The methodology integrates documentary analysis, spatialization of census data, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Partial results reveal that low-income populations, particularly Black and peripheral communities, are those most affected by inadequate access to sanitation services. This study contributes to the debate on environmental justice, public policy, and urban planning by proposing critical cartography as a tool for exposing and addressing socio-spatial inequalities that shape the metropolitan landscape of Rio de Janeiro.
